The rapid curing of UV paint under ultraviolet light is due to its scientifically designed structure. As a photocurable coating, its basic structure consists of four main parts: film-forming resin, reactive diluent, photoinitiator, and additives. These parts work synergistically to determine the coating's performance and curing behavior.
The film-forming resin is the main framework of the UV paint, typically an acrylate oligomer containing unsaturated double bonds, such as epoxy acrylate, polyurethane acrylate, and polyester acrylate. Under ultraviolet light excitation, these resins participate in free radical or cationic polymerization reactions, forming a three-dimensional network polymer film that imparts excellent mechanical strength, adhesion, and durability to the coating. The choice of different resin types directly affects the coating's flexibility, hardness, and chemical resistance.
The reactive diluent functions as both a diluent and a crosslinker in the system, and is mostly a monofunctional or polyfunctional acrylate monomer. It reduces the system viscosity for easier application and, under photoinitiation, copolymerizes with the resin, becoming part of the network structure and avoiding VOC emissions associated with using common solvents.
Photoinitiators are the core component for achieving instant curing in UV coatings. Under specific wavelengths of ultraviolet light, they decompose to generate free radicals or cations, triggering a chain polymerization reaction between the resin and diluent. Their type and dosage must be precisely matched to the light source spectrum and coating thickness to ensure a balance between curing rate and depth.
Additives, including leveling agents, defoamers, and stabilizers, although making up a small percentage, play a crucial role in improving application performance, suppressing defects, and extending shelf life.
Overall, the structural design of UV coatings achieves a balance between low solubility and high reactivity, ensuring both environmental friendliness and the formation of a fully functional film in a very short time. This is the structural basis for their widespread application in high-end coating fields.
